Poster Analysis 3(The conjuring)

This is the classic poster for the conjuring, the mise-en-scene of this poster denotes that the film is set in a lonely and abandoned surrounding which is a convention of a horror film genre, to portray the idea that there is no one to save you.

it also shows the main characters positioned in the middle of the poster which immediately draws the audience’s attention to them which implies they are the main character, the main character is  sitting in a chair but there is one that has turned its head and is starring directly at the audience, this has been done strategically to entice the audience and scar at the same time because the movie has given life to what seems to be a doll, the lighting in the potters is very low with  only a splash of white here and the use of the dark lighting and the black and white colour is to create the theme of lurking danger the colour black connotes death and fear which is what the producers are trying to promote through the poster, this seems to be the theme with most horror film posters.Todorov’s narrative theory can be applied to this poster because as you can see in this poster the equilibrium is shown and then something comes along to disrupt the story which in this case would be the doll ,at the top of the poster “from the director of  saws and insidious” this is to entice the audience to go and view the movie because the saw and insidious are two very big movies that did very well at the box office, the text written at the bottom of the screen is the title of the film written in bold white font also what is written is “based on the case files of the warrens” this make the audience intrigued to see what the film is about because this adds a sense of realness because this shows there is some truth to the story they will be telling through film, underneath that in grey small print is the credits, underneath is written coming soon this is to give the audience something to look forward to.Next to the credits is the ” warner bros” logo this will help to sell the film because they are a well established popular company, the fact that the film has been produced by the Warner Bros suggest that the film is aimed at a more mature audience.

Poster Analysis 2(The possession)

Possession Key

This is a teaser poster for the possession, the teaser poster is normally very simple. it introduces the audience to the main character, they can tell that the main character is a female. in this poster it shows the audience that the main character is in a dark and deserted surrounding and whatever is in the wooden box has taken over her body. the fact that the character is wearing a nighty and also the darkness of the atmosphere tells the audience that the story takes place at night. the title is written in big white letters at the top of the poster this is to draw attention to them so they stand out, I feel that the title of the film and the image they have chosen to use as the poster go hand in hand because the fact that the strong light is coming out of the wooden box and then seeming to go into the main character that is it shows to be lifted off her feet, it connotes that whatever is in the wooden box is controlling the protagonist, the main character is possessed by what is in the box.The way the poster has been edited connotes a very dark dingy and creepy feeling to the poster. dark lighting and the use of the colour black and white is very common in a horror film poster because the colour black suggest danger and death.

The way the poster has been edited connotes a very dark dingy and creepy feeling to the poster,  when there is light in the poster it’s in very bright burst to draw attention to what the production team want the audience to focus on, the box with the light facing towards the protagonist is done strategically so the audience cannot see what is in it so that this ill entice people to go and view the film. I think that baths enigma code could be applied to this poster because the little girl is being lifted off her feet by what is in the box and the audiences is left waiting to see what happens to resolve this problem.

Poster Analysis 1(The exorcist)

This is a classic poster , the difference between a classic poster and a teaser poster is that the teaser poster normally doesn’t contain a lot of information the teaser poster normally involves the title of the film a basic picture of the scenery and the release data or “coming soon”.

The mise-en-scene denotes that the film is set in a lonely abandoned street with only the company of a street light. the character is wearing a tailored suit with a hat and holding a duffle bag which connotes that the characters is a man and also a sense of mystery this establishes the equilibrium of narrative ,which suggest the character is the protagonist and whatever the story is it happens in the building he is gazing up at and in the apartment in which the bright blinding light is coming out of .the colours on this poster is very simple and basic because of the genre of the film, the colours black and dark purple connotes evil and lurking danger, they use this to portray to the audience.the lighting in this poster is very low this is to keep in with the theme of mystery. the title of the film is written in large bold purple text towards the bottom of the poster, this is to make it stand out from this rest of the poster. the credits are written in sketchy white text, the purpose of the credits is to acknowledge the people who took part in the production of the film and also to entice the audience, because they normally put the stars of the film and the most famous names on the poster. the cover line used right at the top of the poster reads “the scariest movie of all time has returned in a version you’ve never seen before” the use of the scariest movie of all time helps to persuade the audience to go and see the film because they are intrigued to see if the film will match up to thisIstatement.i believe that Todorov’s narrative theory can be applied to this poster because we are introduced to the character and what the problem may be.

The genre of my film will be horror, the most typical features of a horror film is usually an element involving ghost, death or murder even the living dead- (zombies and vampires), there is often a ghost monster that the main character or characters have to get away from or defeat. blood tends to be a common theme in horror genre films it can be seen after or an attack on a character or an animal a horror film without blood may be seen as unusual and for some unacceptable, a horror film normally has a n element designed to unsettle or frighten the audience this may been that the monster pops up unexpectedly every so often or it could even be as simple as a evil laugh, horror films can be simply drawn to a close or have an open ending to the movie to leave room for a sequel.

The typical settings of a horror genre film is usually abandoned neighbour hoods or small quite community’s or this can include large ghost towns or even urban environments with airy back street alleys, the locations that are chosen are ones that suggest that danger is lurking around the corner and can come out and get you at anytime. in some horror films the setting is a place with some kind of dark history e.g. a hospital, hotel even mental asylums or an old house that has been abandoned or recently gained a new occupant.

The usual character in horror films are a hero or protagonist that needs to save the day or solve the problem at hand and intern their is a victim in which the protagonist is trying to get to in order to save, their is also a villain the creator or the evil monster will be the person that has created the problem and will continue to instigate movie, the villain can either be a monster a serial killer or a ghost. If children are featured in horror films they usually paly a more sinister role, they usually use little girls, they are seen as more creepier than little boys. The costumes is horror films are usually dark to keep in with the theme but costumes can be used to identify the good characters from the villain the protagonist will usual be dressed in a lighter colour than the villain.

Common object that you will see in a horror genre film includes a mask this ties in with the sinister feel of a film and usually their is a common that appears regularly that the protagonist uses is against the villain or in some cases the holy bible will be an recurring feature especially when the villain is a ghost.

Research analysis

I researched my audience by sending out a survey to thirty people the results of that survey show me that the majority of my audience will be male ages between eighteen and twenty years old, it also shows that all 30 people that filled out my survey watch horror films it also shows that the majority of those people attend the cinema every week, 75% of the people are enrolled as a student in some form of education it also shows that the same percent of people are also in emplyment, and are more likely to go and view a film in which their own age group is cast, when there are characters of the viewers own age group involved in a film it makes the movie more relatable.the 8th question that was on the survey i sent out was “do you use social media ?”  100% of the 30 people sued some form of social media this is good because they will be able to spread a buzz and create awareness of the movie to people who may not have seen it before., the 9th question on this survey was “what makes a trailer appeal to you” the most dominating response was the storyline, the last question was “do you think the opening of a trailer should include dialogue?” the answer to this question was 50/50.after doing this audience research  and analysing my results i will make sure that my trailer has a strong storyline which is intriguing and easy for my target audience to follow.
