Trailer analysis 3-(crimson peak)

The aim of a trailer is to advertise and promote a new film to its target audience it aims to encourage people to go and view the film. The genre of the film is normally advertised in the trailer by cinematography techniques such as faced paced camera shots, these are normally used in a horror film trailer. The choice of actors in the film usually help the film reach their target audience because some actors are normally associated with certain genres, trailers usually have a unique selling point to help them stand out from films of the same genre.

The crimson peak movie was released in October 19th of 2015; the opening of the trailer introduces the audience to the setting through a sequence of establishing shots, by doing this it allows the audience to feel more involved in the film, the shots are of a dated Victorian house. The trailer has a child in the bed at the beginning, and also shots of the street showing that it is set in Victorian times.

The camera work in the trailer in the trailer is meshed with a series of long shots and mid shots to show the setting of the film and to introduce the audience to the characters and the atmosphere of the film, the long shots that were used to highlight the Victorian time period through the horse and carriages, this can be thought to set the tone and also showing the surroundings, the corridors in the room seem airy and makes the character seem as if they are trapped.

The camera uses high angle shots to show how powerless the characters are against the elements of nature or of an alien, they use the high angle establishing shots to show how abandoned the house is the second shot could also be considered as appoint of view shot because it is being viewed from the audiences. The editing in the trailer is quick cutting helps to create tension this encourages the audience to go and view the film.

The diegetic sound in the trailer was starts out as dialogue between the characters then further more along towards the end of the trailer it turns into screams and shrieks. You can hear the sound of the rain drops of at the beginning of the trailer the none-diegetic sound is the orchestra playing while all the mayhem takes place in the forefront; mise-en-scene setting at first the setting is quite light and uplifting but as it gets further to the end the setting because deserted and horrific as the what is taken place in the castle starts to feel like endless torment.

Throughout the trailer the mood of the usually dark predominantly black these are colours associated with death and doom, ghost and powers not of our world, the colour of the characters costumes are normally pale which matches the ghost theme of the movie, mode of address- at the end of the film there is a black screen that says “coming soon” for the target audience to anticipate the move and also the website for the movie and also the Facebook page this will help the movie gain viewers from social media which is essential nowadays.

Barthe’s enigma theory- the purpose of the trailer is to create mystery surrounding the film’s release and this theory can be applied to the crimson peak trailer because mystery is created throughout. This creates anticipation for the movie because the target audience will be intrigued to see more

The choice of actors in the film usually help the film reach their target audience because some actors are normally associated with certain genres, trailers usually have a unique selling point to help them stand out from films of the same genre.

The cabin in the woods this film was released in 2012, the opening of the trailer introduces the audience to the main characters and straight away to what the problem is going to be, there is also a birds eye view shot and a couple point of view shots.by having a large a lot of establishing shots it helps to make audience feel as if they are involved in the movie. The shot of a control room soon creates an uneasy atmosphere for the audience and enhances the horror genre.

The camera work in this trailer is used to show the emotion and reactions on the characters faces as the story unfolds and they see the trap that they have been led into, they use a lot of close up and medium shots and birds eye view in the trailer to first establish the setting then show the sequence, it helps the audience to gain a personal connection with the characters but also make them feel slightly uncomfortable. Towards the end of the trailer they have used the quick cutting editing technique which is not unusual when it comes to horror genre films, the fast cutting helps to create tension and excitement from the viewers it will encourage them to go and view the movie, they have edited the trailer so they show the most exciting scenes and also having multiple shots of a black screen with red text on it, by doing this it makes the user question what they have just seen, also the use of red is also a sign of danger.

Also in the trailer there is non-diegetic sound put over all the action going on in the different sense this makes it seem like the people are not alone in the cabin and that somebody is watching them, because of all the rhetorical questions that are being asked which is adding to the tension that the audience is already feeling. The diegetic sound in this trailer starts with the characters in car sounding optimistic and happy but eventually they start to sound plagued with fear, the sounds of horror fright start to fill the ears of the viewers.

Mise-en-scene the setting of the movie is where a group of hopeful friends are going along an abandoned round and happen to stop and some broken down shop where they are pointed in the direction, the main setting is in the cabin in where the characters are isolated in woods. Where they start to realise they are not in usually cabin. This can cannot that the characters are trapped in some kind of game or prison like surrounding.

The lighting at the first part of the trailer is very bright but it soon turns dark, particularly black throughout the movie this creates a sense of danger and is often associated with death, which is appropriate for the movies storyline. The colour of the characters costumes are often filled with build and dirt which connotes are very gritty and airy feeling to the viewers.

Mode of address throughout the film there is a back screen displaying the release date of the film, this is so the target audience know when to see the film so they are anticipating it, they also display the website for the film this type of advertising is relevant for advertising because the movie target audience will be able to raise awareness through social media.

Barthe’s enigma theory- the purpose of a trailer is create mystery surrounding the film’s release and this theory can be applied to the cabin in the woods because a mystery is created all the way through the trailer.
